Angie and the Car Wrecks
Angie and the Car Wrecks are comprised of two brothers, Shawn and Dale Ball, on the upright bass and guitar, respectively, with their good friends Calvin Jernberg on the drums, Garrett Pessin on Harmonica and Dale's wife Angie Ball leading the pack and taking on vocals. They are based in a small town in the Pacific Northwest, where they hone their craft on many rainy days stuck inside.
The Car Wrecks have a 6-song EP that was released in March of 2010 and has been well-received. The EP has helped them land some prominent gigs; they were handpicked by the founders of the Kurt Cobain Memorial Committee to open for Grammy award-winning band Soul Asylum at their 2010 Lounge Acts show Nov. 13th in Aberdeen, WA and were also chosen to perform at the first ever Reno Rockabilly Riot, a 3-day pin-up contest/hot rod show/tattoo convention/Rockabilly festival taking place in Reno, NV in May of 2011, and the Seattle movie premiere of Rat Rod Rockers at the King Cat Theater. They also played the 2010 Kustom Kulture Festival in Silverdale, WA opening for James Hunnicutt, the Juke Joint Gamblers, Hard Money Saints, Big John Bates and the Voodoo Dollz, and Three Bad Jacks, and are penciled in to perform at the 2011 Kustom Kulture Festival with The Rocketz and others. They have played with such bands as the Chop Tops from Santa Cruz, CA, Jason and the Punknecks from Nashville, TN, the Cheatin Hearts from Chico, CA, The Defibulators and Izzy & the Kesstronics from Brooklyn, NY, The Del Ranchos, Shivering Denizens, The Screaming Starts, The Dicers and the Infamous Swanks. They played in Long Beach, WA at the 4th Annual Jake the Alligator Man Birthday Party and embarked on their very first West Coast tour in August 2010, touring through parts of Oregon and California, and also Reno, NV.
The Car Wrecks' main influences are the pioneers of classic rockabilly music, most of them featured on the Sun label in the 1950's: Carl Perkins, Billy Lee Riley, Elvis, and of course Johnny Cash. Other influences include Hank Williams Sr., Slayer, Loretta Lynn, Alice in Chains, Black Sabbath, Waylon Jennings, Murder By Death and more recently, the Chop Tops, Reverend Horton Heat, Hank III and James Hunnicutt.
What sets them apart from other bands is that they are almost all family members and this gives them a tightness that puts them above and beyond other bands. They are an extremely cohesive unit and they never fail to entertain. They are always professional and serious about what they do; they love music and they love to play music, and that comes through in every performance.
Shawn learned to play bass, first on a standard electric, during his stint in the Navy where he earned the title of Corpsman. After five long years and many visits to faraway countries, Shawn returned home to WA and enrolled in college, graduating in June 2010 with an AA. Winning a coin toss with Dale preempted Shawn to move on to the stand-up bass two years ago and he has not looked back.
Dale is employed in the automobile industry and spends the rest of his time playing guitar. He recently switched to guitar two and a half years ago; previously, his instrument of choice was electric bass, which he played in punk bands such as Anti-Squad back in his teen years.
Angie, the band's singer and acoustic guitar player, is also a full-time college student in the nursing program at Grays Harbor College. She and Dale are the parents of two young boys, one of whom was the inspiration for their popular song Jr. Rebel.
Calvin, the drummer, is no stranger to the music scene; he has been playing in bands since he was 14.
Garrett, the newest member of the band, plays the Harmonica not only for Angie and the Car Wrecks but two other bands in the Portland, OR area.
Together they bring you an exciting blend of country, rockabilly, psychobilly and surf music and they look damn good doing it!
